The Vision St. Charles County Leadership Program recently kicked off our 2020 Program Year with a Leadership Retreat. This year for her birthday, I contacted Jeff to inquire about surprising mom at her office. HE KNOCKED OUR SOCKS OFF! The surprise went without a hitch and Jeff’s performance was entertaining, exciting, engaging and SO MUCH FUN. I now live in Houston and Jeff was able to perform not only for the conference room in St. Louis, but engaged with the Facebook Live stream my dad had going, so our family and friends could watch from afar as well.

“I was interested in writing a review of this book because I have heard Jeff talk about his interest in authenticity for years now, and this review affords me the opportunity to place his concerns about authenticity within a wider psychological context. When Jeff talks about authenticity I hear echoes of the writings of Donald Winnicott. Winnicott is truly one of the great figures in psychology. He was a pediatrician and psychoanalyst who wrote with deep insight about the development of the mind of the child, and hence the human mind.

One of Winnicott’s hallmark ideas is the false self. He thought that a child, when faced with an unresolvable conflict about love, where he or she must choose between being true to themselves, and complying with parental expectations, unconsciously creates a false self. This false self is a compliant self, which has within itself the child’s true self who is thus sheltered from the vicissitudes of this terrible choice. Such a child faces the dilemma: do I surrender myself in order to keep the love of my mother, or do I listen to myself and risk being alone, abandoned, or banished from the only love I know. Adults do not generally recall as adults that they once faced dilemmas of this magnitude, but Winnicott did. When Jeff Koziatek directs his reader to try to find their authentic self, and live in a way consistent with that he is tapping into a deep root within psychology. This is what people strive for in their lives; and many seek therapy or counseling to regain access to this core of themselves that was jettisoned very early in order to earn, or keep, approval, love, or to find success in the world. For many people losing track of their early true self produces tremendous psychic pain, and it is only by pursuing a path to rediscover it that they can begin to feel right within themselves.
In this very slim volume Jeff identifies the false paths that too often people follow when they seek a way to alter their consciousness and manage their pain. These include drugs, alcohol, sex, and what he refers to as “toxic” friends. These are all ways to avoid feeling the pain; but unless one feels and experiences their real vulnerability and suffering, the false self is only reinforced. Jeff talks about perfectionism. This is an attempt to construct a false self that is invulnerable and gives the illusion of being able to avoid suffering—it sounds appealing, but really, it never works. None of us is invulnerable, and only by recognizing that can we have a real and satisfying life.

Ultimately this small book provides solid suggestions for healthy living and finding a foundation for genuine satisfactions in building a life.”
